Week of April 30

I sent home another permission slip with the kids Monday. We have a field trip, next Monday, May 7th. We are going to the Annett Nature Center. Please try to have it back before Friday!

This is our last week of our reading program. Can you believe it! Your child should be able to read ALL words from the list now! WOW! This weeks' high frequency words are: answered, brothers, carry, different, and poor. In phonics we will learn about prefixes un- and re- and long vowels i and o (with no bossy e at end).

In math we will be continuing with fraction work.

Our chicks have hatched!! We got five cute little chicks and have really enjoyed them this week! (see pictures below)

This coming week our high frequency words are built, early, learn, science, and through. Our phonics skills are the vowel sound of aw/au and short e:ea.

In math, we are finally starting unit 9! We have been distracted this week with those chicks! We will be working with our number grid (hundreds chart) to find patterns, do puzzles, and make rules.

Our field trip is on Thursday to City State Bank. Banana Buck Sale and Popcorn Day is on Friday.

It's a busy, but fun week!

Week of April 16

This week, Wednesday is an early out day and we hope that our chicks will hatch! Cross your fingers that they survived!

In reading we will be working with the oi, oy sound and suffixes-er and -or. The high frequency words are against, goes, heavy, kinds, and today. We are also reading fictional stories about simple machines.

In math, we are finishing up unit 8. We will be reviewing fractions, money, time, fact families, place value. We will take our test and start unit 9.

In social studies we will continue to learn about families. In science we will continue to learn about chicks.

Week of April 9

This week we have our field trip AND spring pictures on Thursday, April 12.

In reading the high frequency words are among, another, instead, and none.

We will be working on compare and contrast, the oo sound as in book and inflected endings like -ed, -ing, -s, and -es.

In math we are learning about fractions and more practice with money.

In Social Studies we are starting our family and Earth Day unit. In Science we are watching our chicks develop.

Week of April 2

Happy April!

We have 30 chick eggs in our room and are hoping to see them hatch in approximately 18 days! The kids are so excited and are loving to play "mother hen" and turn the eggs three times a day. :)

April is also National Poetry Month so we will be reading lots of poems and our author of the month is Shel Silverstein.


This week in reading the phonics skills are the ou sound as in loud. We will also work on syllables. The high frequency words are door, loved, should, and wood. We are going to work on exclamation points as well.

In math we are working on story problems, making change, and beginning concepts of fractions dealing with equal shares.

Please remember to send back your permission slip to the Des Moines Playhouse that will be on April 12.

Week of March 26

I hope everyone had a great spring break (even with all this rainy weather!).

This week we are starting a new math and reading unit!

I can't believe we are already on the last reading unit of the year! The high frequency words are along, behind, eyes, never, pulling, and toward. The phonics skills are ow/ou sounds and syllables consonant+le like turtle.

In math we are going to review money, place value, and time. We will also add dollars into our money counting.

In science we will soon be starting chicks and watching them change from eggs into baby chickens!

In social studies we will finish our unit on needs, wants, goods, and services.

Week of March 12

Monday is the music program! Please meet me in the Eastview cafeteria at 6:30 for the 6:45 program. I hope you all can make it.

In Reading, we are finishing up unit 4 (can you believe there is only one more unit to go!). Your child should now be able to read all of the sight words for first grade through unit four. This week's words are across, because, ,dance, only, opened, shoes, and told. The phonics skills are the suffixes -ly and-ful. We also will talk about the 00 sound, as in moon. We will continue to talk about adjectives, nouns, and verbs.

In social studies, we will continue talking about needs and wants, as well as introducing goods vs. services.

In Science, they will be finishing up the plant unit.

In Math we are finishing up Unit 7 with review about geometry and taking the test before Friday.

Don't forget that spring break is next week! Enjoy the long vacation! :)

Week of March 5

Can you believe it is already March? This year has flown by! Last week we had a fun time celebrating Dr. Seuss. We will continue to read his books this week, as well.

Spring pictures are on Tuesday morning. Don't forget your order forms if you are interested!

Thursday, March 8 I will be working at Bang Bang in West Des Moines from 5-7. A percentage of the profits will go to the school if you are interested in coming for dinner.

It is early out on Wednesday, dismissal at 12.

This week in reading, the high frequency words are picture, remember, room, stood, and thought. The phonics skills are ew, ue, and ui long u sounds and compound words.

In social studies we are continuing needs and wants. In Science, they are working on plants.

In math, we are continung our geometry unit. We will continue learning about polygons and introduce 3-dimensional shapes, and symmetry.

Week of February 27

This week is Dr. Seuss read across America week. Please refer to the email and flyer I sent home about dress up week! :)

We will be reading lots of Dr. Seuss this month and especially this week. We will be creating oobleck on Friday and creating some Dr. Seuss art.

In Reading, our phonics skills are the long i sound with the -igh and -ie spelling pattern. The high frequency words are laugh, touch, moon, eight, and above.

In math we will be starting unit 7 on geometry. We will be learning about shapes and their attributes.

In social studies we will start working on needs and wants.

Week of February 14

Happy Valentine's Day!

This week in math we will be practicing measuring in centimeters, graphing and data analysis, and reviewing for our unit 6 test coming up next week.

In reading, we are working with the long o sound (oa and ow) and three letter blends like spl in split. The high frequency words are found, mouth, once, took, and wild. We will be reading a story about dinosaurs called Mr. Bones, Dinosaur Hunter.

On Friday, it will be pajama day as we earned another class reward!

Look for a conference preparation form coming home with the homework on Tuesday to turn in to help me prepare for our conferences coming up!

Week of February 6

This week we have an early out on Wednesday. Dismissal is at noon.

In Reading, our story of the week is The Dot. The high frequency words are colors, draw, drew, great, over, show, and sign. In phonics we are working on the long e sound with ea and changing the y to i in words like happier and silliest.

I math we are working on quarters and digital time.

In social studies we are continuing maps and science is continuing plants. We will also be starting a Flat Stanley project. Look for instructions coming soon.

Week of January 30

This week is a fun one!

Thursday, February 2nd is Groundhog's day and the 100th day of school! If your child would like to bring in 100 of something you own on Thursday, you may.

This week we are starting Unit 4. The high frequency words are about,enjoy, give, surprise, worry, and would. In phonics we are working on the long a sound is ai and ay and possessives. We are starting work on adjectives.

In Math we will be working on subtraction facts, measuring to the centimeter, and more what's my rule problems.

In Social Studies we are continuing work on maps. In Science they are starting a unit on plants.

Week of January 23

Happy Chinese New Year!

This week is an early out on Wednesday. Dismissal is at noon.

In Social Studies we will begin our map unit.

In Reading, the high frequency words are: before, does, good-bye, oh, right, won't. Your child should now be able to read all of the unit 3 words. The phonics skills are -er and -est (big, bigger, biggest) and -dge words (budge).


In Math, we are starting Unit 6. This deals with more addition and subtraction tables. This week we will start with fact families, fact triangles, and equivalent names (2= 1+1 and 2+0).

Week of January 16

I hope everyone enjoys a day off on Monday! :) We have briefly discussed Martin Luther King, Jr. and will continue to do so this week. Also, in Social Studies we are beginning a unit on maps.

In Reading, the high frequency words are done, know, push, visit, and wait. The phonics skills are the rest of the r-controlled vowels er, ir, and ur. We will review contractions and learn some new ones: 's, 've, and 're. We will also be talking about life cycles as the story is about a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. :)

In math we will be finishing up Unit 5. We will continue with "what's my rule" problems, review for the test and take the test this week.

On Friday, we have our mini-field trip to the Middle School to hear the Swing Choir. Don't forget to return your permission slips!

Week of January 9th

This week in Reading our story of the week is Frog and Toad Together. The high frequency words are afraid, again, few, how, read, and soon. The phonics skills -ed and -ing endings along with r controlled ar.

In Math we will do several activities to work on "fact power," or adding without using a number line quickly: dice sums (addition facts), turn-around facts, easy facts fluency (doubles, +1,+0, sums to 10), and what's my rule? (addition patterns).

In Social Studies, we will be continuing with Chinese New Year.

Week of January 3rd

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope everyone had a fabulous holiday and break from school! I know I did! It was nice to visit family and have a break.

This week we are back to the grind! In reading we will be talking about plural words with the -es ending. We are also talking about bossy r with r controlled vowels-or and ore. The high frequency words are away, car, friends, house, our, school, and very.

In math, we will continue with greater than and less than number stories and sentences, comparison math problems, number stories, and dice sums (addition).

In Social studies we will talk about the Chinese New Year and our new year by making resolutions, and discussing the Chinese traditions.
